Overview of NM Diversity Program

The DSOC and VLA will be served by at least one Diversity Advocate and an Employee Diversity Group (see full role descriptions in "Documents" below). As an overarching goal, Advocates and EDG members should:

  • actively promote the benefits of diversity
  • speak up to address issues that fail to meet NRAO's standards of inclusion
  • value the power of diverse ideas and experiences

Diversity Advocates

In brief, Diversity Advocates:

  • serve as D&I point of contact at site
  • serve as Chair of Employee Diversity Group
  • represent and champion D&I in everyday actions
  • communicate to Site Director outcomes of D&I meetings
  • work with Site Director and D&I Director to organize site activities
  • manage NRAO D&I activities at site level
  • provide information on site S&I activities for NSF reporting
  • more (see Position Description)

Employee Diversity Group (EDG) Members

In brief, EDG Members:

  • participate in NM D&I meetings
  • assist with sharing Observatory-wide D&I communications
  • serve as D&I role model
  • communicate D&I-related information to Diversity Advocate
  • be attentive to opportunities to advocate for D&I
  • complete assigned suite of training classes
  • solicit ideas from employees regarding diversity oriented events/issues relevant to site

Eligibility

All current NRAO employees are eligible to apply to serve in either capacity. Selection criteria can be found in the role descriptions (see below). While NRAO policy strongly supports service in this capacity, please make sure that this service is approved by your supervisor. Applications will be opened as soon as possible following the Information Meeting.

Training

Please know that appropriate Diversity & Inclusion training will be provided, and will be a requirement of service.

Information Meeting

In order to discuss, in more depth, the Diversity Advocate and EDG program, we will hold an Information Meeting at which interested NRAO employees will:

  • learn more about the DA and EDG member roles
  • help determine the next steps for the program (applications, meeting formats and schedule, proposed ideas, etc.)
