Jeyhan Kartaltepe, PhD
Life Experiences as an Astronomer and Lessons LearnedJune 26, 2015 My research focuses on the role that galaxy mergers and interactions have played in galaxy evolution over the age of the universe. These collisions can affect many important galaxy properties, such as their physical structure, their star formation rates, and the growth of their central black holes. However, the details of this role and how it has changed over the age of the Universe, is still a matter of much debate. I will give a brief overview of my research and then focus on my own path and my experiences as a female student and postdoc in the field. I will include perspectives that have been shaped by the range of institutes I have attended or worked at in the course of my career, including a small college, a major research institute, and a national observatory.
About Jeyhan As an American of Turkish descent, Jeyhan S. Kartaltepe has a unique perspective on the path of minorities working to establish a career in science. After completing high school in her home state of Texas, she studied physics and astronomy at Colgate University. Continuing on to the University of Hawaii, she completed her Masters degree and received a PhD in 2009 for her work on "Multi-wavelength Studies of Ultra Luminous Galaxies in the COSMOS field". She is currently an Assistant Professor of Physics at Rochester Institute of Technology where she helps to mentor a new generation of astronomers for work in academia, research and the commercial sector.
