Job Information - Titles, Families, and Career Path Information
The information on this page provides an overview on how our jobs are grouped and described. This overview can be used to learn more about the multiple jobs within the Observatory and potential career paths. You are encouraged to speak with your manager and human resources representative to learn more. Important Definitions Job Classification refers to the assigned job title, FLSA exemption status (non-exempt/exempt), and assigned pay grade for all positions. Each position's job classification is reviewed periodically. Otherwise, updates to the documents below are conducted annually. A list of job titles and their assigned pay grade can be found here. Job Description is a summary of the most important features of a job, including the general nature of the work performed (duties and responsibilities) and the level (skill, effort, responsibility, and working conditions) of the work performed. It describes the work and the requirements of the job itself and does not focus on the skill or attributes of the incumbent. A database of current NRAO & GBO job descriptions is accessible here. Functional Job Groups are groups of jobs related by common vocations and professions. Therefore, jobs within a functional job group have many similarities which include similar work and require similar training, skills, knowledge, and expertise. Career Paths are a way to help individuals think through and plan out various ways to meet their career goals. This information can be used as an ongoing mechanism or tool to help individuals plan for ways to enhance their skills and knowledge that can lead to mastery of their current jobs, promotions, and transfers to new or different positions. Computer and Information Technology Professionals Computer professional and information technical support and services includes occupations related to information technology deployment, including implementing computer systems and software, database management, network administration, providing technical assistance, and managing information systems. Skilled Crafts and Trades Plans, designs, manages or performs activities related to the maintenance, construction, repair or installation of infrastructure, facilities, grounds, equipment and/or vehicles. Typical job families:
Technical Support Provides skilled technical assistance to perform a variety of tasks in support of engineering, operational and scientific functions, projects and programs. Depending on the area of activity, support provided may be in the form of supporting electrical or mechanical engineering projects; operating assigned equipment; or supporting observatory users by reducing routine data and imaging. Engineering Applies mathematics, science and technology concepts to solve problems quantitatively in engineering projects involving design, development or production in various technologies. Typical job families:

Program and Project Management Organizes and monitors activities relating to the management and completion of projects and programs having a defined beginning and end.
